What you would spend to combat environmental change - and what you could get with your money

Solar panels and frames

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels, or solar panels, are a method of capturing daylight and converting it into energy. They reduce the amount of power you need from the grid, which in turn reduces your energy costs.

A normal family in Sydney can set aside up to $900 a year by installing a 4-kilowatt system on their roof. Solar innovation is getting better and cheaper - a normal 4-kilowatt rooftop installation can be paid off in less than five years through lower energy bills.

As the nation consumes and temperatures rise, environmental change is indeed on the front line of our public knowledge.

It's a difficulty that seems to be unshakeable, and one that has concerned the government for some time.

More than 54,000 Australians participated in the wide-ranging national survey Solar Panel Sydney, Australia Talks, and the main thing they said kept them awake at night was environmental change.

When we asked how much more they could spend specifically to help prevent environmental change, the numbers shifted.

A few people wouldn't spend much more (21 percent) and some were happy to burn through thousands (9 percent) - but a large proportion of us are somewhere in the middle. All in all, we are willing to contribute at least $200 a year*.

To stop environmental change we would need to make some significant improvements to the way the world works, so would a few hundred dollars a year have any effect at all?

It may not seem like much, but regardless of whether we take the bare minimum that Australians revealed to us they would spend, it would amount to just over $4 billion* a year.

By comparison, the Federal Government doesn't exactly spend a great deal of that on cutting nursery discharges and right around a multiple of that on surveillance.

Just one Attack-class submarine should cost $6.6 billion in any case.

So what could we get for our money?

According to Richard Denniss, chief economist of the Australia Institute, with $4 billion we could fit about 1,000,000 houses with rooftops.

At that rate, each of Australia's 10 million homes would have a neighboring planetary system within 10 years.

"Let's get right to the point, in the event that we did that for the next not many years, the vast majority would have dense free power for the next 20 years," Dr. Denniss says.

Or even then, every year we could equip a large proportion of 1,000,000 homes with home batteries.

The French energy organization Neoen recently discovered that the monster Tesla battery in South Australia cost $90 million. For that price, we could buy 44 a year.

As well as helping overlook the top interest rate and reducing South Australia's dependence on gas generators, Neoen estimates its battery saved buyers about $50 million in its first year of operation.

On the other hand, we could subsidise what could be compared to a Snowy Hydro 2.0 plan several years with change saving.

Cold Hydro works like a goliath battery, putting away energy that can be "turned on" when the sun is not shining and the breeze is not blowing.

The Cold Hydro 2.0 can store enough energy at a given time to serve 3 million homes for seven days.

Or we could spend $4,000 per house to improve the energy efficiency of 1,000,000 homes each year, with things like security, brilliant meters and energy-saving devices.

Starting with the lowest paying family units, this would reduce energy costs overall, as well as ozone-depleting emissions.

$4 billion a year would go a long way to reducing emissions quickly," says Dr Denniss.

Advantages of Solar Panel PV

Solar energy has several environmental and financial benefits, including:

reducing your carbon footprint

lowering energy bills

possibly attracting monetary incentives from your energy supplier.

Solar panel installation as they can fit on their roofs. Notwithstanding, the most sensible approach is to choose a frame size that suits your needs.
